Thom is a member of 9 Gough Square (Chambers of Andrew Ritchie QC), which is a leading common law set of barristers' chambers. 9 Gough Square are at the forefront of change in the legal profession, providing modern, professional and approachable legal services to a wide range of clients throughout the country and abroad.

After being called to the Bar in 2007 at Inner Temple, Thom undertook a civil and commercial law pupillage at Hardwicke, where he was supervised by Brie Stevens-Hoare QC and Kerry Bretherton QC. He subsequently moved across to take up a criminal and public law third six at 6KBW College Hill (Chambers of David Perry QC and Simon Denison QC), where he was supervised by Sarah Whitehouse QC.

Thom is a registered pupil supervisor, as well as regularly volunteering his time as an advocacy trainer for Inner Temple.  In 2013 he completed the SEC's Advanced International Advocacy Course at Keble College, Oxford. Thom is a Grade 3 advocate on the CPS Panel and is also on the CPS rape list. He is a member of the South Eastern Circuit's 'Access to Justice Working Group'.
